Fundraiser Event - Final Update
About a week ago, an important fundraiser event was concluded by Ethical Durham in support of the lacrosse legal defense fund. Through that effort, a Chevy Tahoe 2007 was raffled off and $66,300 was raised for the defense fund. This was a major undertaking and it required a lot of coordination and effort by many individuals. Even the legal status of Ethical Durham had to be changed to be able to carry it out. All those hurdles were successfully crossed. Today, I would like to acknowledge major contributions made to this important fundraiser by several individuals and thank them. Without their contributions, the raffle would not have been possible.
First and foremost, our thanks go to Robert and Sally Fogarty for donating the Chevy Tahoe 2007. Their generosity is much appreciated by the beneficiaries of the legal defense fund. In fact, words are not enough to thank them properly. Many thanks for Ethical Durham as well! They worked tirelessly to make this a successful fundraiser. This was the group’s first serious fundraiser and they had to learn every step of the way. Despite that, they handled the event like professionals. Our hats are off to Ethical Durham and Stefanie Sparks in particular. Last but not least, thank you Mrs. Susan Wolcott and Mr. George Jennison for handling the overall coordination and logistics. Without your guidance and leadership the raffle would not have been a success.
This brings me to the next group of people who deserves a big thank you. That’s you, all the supporters and friends who purchased the raffle tickets. Thank you for purchasing those tickets. You could not have spent $100 per ticket for a worthier cause. Your support is much appreciated by those who will benefit from the defense fund.
Finally, I would like to congratulate the lucky winner of the raffle. I truly hope you will use your Chevy Tahoe in good times.

This whole effort shows clearly how sometimes tragedy brings out the best of us. Thank you, Ethical Durham and all the others who made this possible. I hope you will come up with more ideas like this one and raise more money for the legal defense. If I understand correctly, the fund is still nowhere close to its target (i.e. what has already been spent).
Good luck in all your future events.
The organizers of the raffle were hoping to sell 1000 tickets and raise $100,000. However, $66,000 is still a very respectable amount and it should help the defense fund very nicely. Given this was the first serious attempt at raising money by this team, they have done well. They should be commanded. Experience is quite important when it comes to raising money. Just like other things, the more money you raise the better you get at doing it.
In my view, they have done very well. I agree with the first commentator. There should be new ideas for future fundraising activities and a lot more money should be raised.
Thank you, Robert and Sally Fogarty. Your generosity is truly remarkable. God bless.
Congratulations Ethical Durham and all the others for a job well done! $66,300 is nothing to sneeze at. You have done very well.
I have two separate ideas for future fundraising projects. I will send an email to FODU and describe what they are. If there is any interest, I am also willing to help implement them. No, I do not have another Chevy Tahoe to donate! My ideas are on a smaller scale. However, they may be worth consideration to help raise some more money for the defense fund.
Thank you, Robert and Sally Fogarty for your donation of the Chevy Tahoe. You helped a very noble cause.
This is terrific! I don't have any ideas for future fundraising activities, but I could donate my time, with pleasure. I too will send an email to FODU to volunteer in case there is a need for it. Dear Fogarties, our gratitude is endless. Thank you!

As they say 'better late than never.' I am so glad to see that finally there is some support coming in the way of these families who have been torn to pieces by these false allegations. It is a shame it took so long for the support to finally form, but it is there now. I hope it continues and it alleviates some of the pain that has been caused by this tragedy.
President Brodhead should be embarrassed the most for his lack of support to the wrongly accused and for his incredibly poor way of handling this mess (or mishandling of it). He disgraced himself with his own words and with actions. When will he start making mends with the Duke community, or does he think that community consists only of Group of 88? He will be surprised when he finally finds out what the reality is.
Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Fogarty for your kindness. You are and always will be first class!
My best wishes are with the falsely accused and all those who got hurt by this case. Best of luck to all of you. My prayers are with you.
Good job with the fundraiser! Thank you Fogarties for your generosity and all the others for your hard work. It is all for a good cause.
Great effort, good results! I join others in thanking Mr. and Mrs. Fogarty for their generous donation.
The Tahoe should be a constant remainder, to the winner, of the lacrosse team, Reade, Collin and Dave. I suspect the winner will think of these people (Reade, Collin, Dave, the TEAM and their families) often as he or she drives the Tahoe. Use it in good health and enjoy it to the fullest.
Best wishes to Reade, Collin and Dave.
Although the raffle brought in over $66,000, this is just a drop in the bucket, according to most accounts. What's missing is an actual amount owed by each player's family. Just what are the legal fees? I understand that the families plan to bring civil suits, with the intention of recouping some of the money they have had to pay their highly competent, but expensive, legal teams. Unfortunately, I feel any victory will be financially unsatisfactory, as you can't get blood from a turnip. If there is any money to be had, the legal teams will get at least a third of it, if not more. I propose a wide-spread direct fundraising campaign to tap into the people of Durham and beyond who have been outraged by this case. I feel certain that "average" folks would be willing to make a donation (even UNC fans like myself) to help the families with the legal fees. However, there must be truthful disclosure of what the actual legal debt is, and how the money will be collected and disbursed to the legal teams. I know not everyone who goes to Duke is rich, but there are plenty of millionaire alumni around the country. Not to solicit help from this group of Duke fans is to ignore a potential revenue resource.

You comments make a great deal of sense. Here is the link for the information on the legal defense fund that has been setup for this purpose.

Now that Nifong is out, perhaps the families would be shifting their focus on this issue and make disclosures about their costs to date. I would imagine that until now they have been focusing on getting the case dismissed and than exposing/punishing Nifong. It will not surprise me to see a shift in the gears now that all that is behind us.
Duke Friend
We need to post the names of the DUKE 88 clowns.
These bastards who advocated " a high tech lynching" needs to be held accountable for their actions.
Outing them is a good start!!!!
